Investing in Rural Communities and Forest Health in the West: Examples of the USDA Forest Service Economic Action Programs (EAP)

The report “Investing in Rural Communities and Forest Health in the West: Examples of USDA Forest Service Economic Action Programs” (PDF, 42 pages) provides stories to capture the many ways that EAP provides needed grants and assistance for example:

  • New wood product development from restoration by-products and small diameter material;
  • Marketing research for forest-based micro-businesses in communities adjacent to public lands;
  • Workforce training to create restoration-based jobs in rural communities;
  • Establish viable post and pole facilities;
  • The “fuels to schools” program to save energy costs for public schools and utilize restoration by-products;
  • Conducting community wildfire risk assessment and defensible space planning and creating Fire Safe Councils;
  • Community Wildfire Protection Plans.
