IMPLEMENTATION TOOLS

Hazardous Fuels Treatment

This page provides users with a brief description of the tool selection guide for identifying the appropriate tool or instrument for their hazardous fuel treatment project.

Since inception of the National Fire Plan and the passage of subsequent legislation, millions of dollars have become available for fuel reduction projects. The Healthy Forests Initiative and the Healthy Forest Restoration Act (HFI/HFRA) are part of a comprehensive strategy to collaboratively approach reducing wildland fire risks to communities and the environment. Since the need to reduce hazardous fuels does not stop at boundaries between public and private lands, the partnerships to accomplish these treatments come in every combination imaginable. Projects may consist of little or no FS involvement to substantial involvement while working with partners on FS lands or providing assistance on non-FS land. The following Implementation Tools provide various mechanisms to accomplish work with our partners while efficiently utilizing limited time, energy and resources.

Tool Selection Guide

This tool selection guide will help you determine which is the appropriate authority or instrument to accomplish your project.

The graphic choice pulls up a PDF colored diagram illustrating all of the types of Hazardous Fuels treatments on one page. Different types of treatments are highlighted in colors relating to the 5 questions described on the first page of the Implementation Tools. The text outline format prompts the user with the same information, while providing more detailed information than the graphic.

At the end, both formats include references to authorities, instruments (either contracts, agreements, or grants) templates, instrument examples, as well as contact information.

Many hazardous fuels projects are being delivered through the states via the Forest Service (FS) State and Private Forestry (S&PF) Branch, which has unique authorities specific to working with states and local communities. Because the states all have their own required processes, rules and regulations, links are provided to each appropriate state’s contact information, instead of attaching each state’s specific templates.
