Capacity-Building for Partnership and Collaboration

The following non-governmental organizations focus on promoting, studying, or working in collaboration and partnerships for land management. Their websites provide many useful tools, resources, and publications. For information about other potential partner organizations, refer to Find Partners.

Association of Partners for Public Lands: a not-for-profit organization working to enhance the potential of its members, who are dedicated to public understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of America’s natural and cultural heritage.

Community-Based Collaborative Research Consortium: a network of researchers, mediators and facilitators, government agencies, community groups, and environmental groups seeking to understand and assess local collaborative efforts involving natural resources and community development.

Ecosystem Management Initiative, School of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Michigan: a leader in ecosystem management research and training, particularly in the area of collaborative resource management.

National Forest Foundation: a non-profit organization chartered by Congress that engages America in community-based and national programs that promote the health and public enjoyment of the 192 million acre National Forest System. NFF is committed to facilitating local involvement and encouraging grassroots participation in forest stewardship.

National Network of Forest Practitioners: an alliance of rural people working on the ground to build a forest economy that is ecologically sound and socially just.

Partnerships Beyond Public Lands: this website exists to share information and tools available to public land managers seeking partnerships with neighboring communities.

Pinchot Institute for Conservation: a non-profit organization located in Washington, DC, specializing in natural resource policy, research, and education and dedicated to leadership in conservation thought, policy and action.

Policy Consensus Initiative: a national nonprofit program working with leaders at the state level–governors, legislators, attorneys general, state agencies, and others–to establish and strengthen the use of collaborative practices to bring about more effective governance.

Red Lodge Clearinghouse: a full support site for collaborative groups committed to resolving resource use conflicts throughout the interior west.

Sierra Institute for Community and Environment: a nonprofit research and education organization based in the northern Sierra Nevada range that is dedicated to advancing rural community well-being and sustainable ecosystems.

The Watershed Center: a community based non-profit organization that promotes healthy communities and sustainable forests through research, education, training, and economic development.

Yellow Wood Associates, Inc.: a consulting firm located in St. Albans, Vermont specializing in rural community economic development.
